Pichia Conferences
Research Corporation Technologies is a sponsor and an organizer of conferences relating to Pichia pastoris and other recombinant yeasts.
Pichia 2009
RCT held its most recent Pichia conference Oct. 18-21, 2009 in Tucson, Ariz.
Only a few months earlier, the complete genome of Pichia had become publicly available. Sessions of the meeting focused on this important development, and how the wealth of information provided by the genome sequence will enable the even more rapid development of Pichia pastoris as an expression host, building on its exceptional natural capacity for heterologous protein expression. Speakers and poster sessions also focused on the latest Pichia developments for glycosylation engineering and other post-translational modifications, process development and improvements in productivity.
James Cregg, Ph.D., of the Keck Graduate Institute, delivered the keynote address, "A Historic Perspective with a Look to the Future." A molecular and cellular biologist with particular expertise and interest in yeasts, Cregg has played a major role in developing the Pichia platform.
The Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB), in Ghent, Belgium, working in collaboration with RCT, had recently completed the sequencing of the genome for Pichia pastoris. Details appear in the June 2009 issue of the journal Nature Biotechnology. Nico Callewaert, Ph.D., and Kristof De Schutter, Ph.D., two of that paper's authors, spoke at the conference.
BioTech 2008
Research Corporation Technologies was a sponsor of the joint BioTech 2008 and 4th Swiss-Czech Symposium May 22-23, 2008, at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Wädenswil.
The meeting, titled "Biopharmaceuticals: why use yeasts?" was an interdisciplinary event for experts from different fields in both academia and industry.
The further potential of recombinant yeasts, in particular Pichia pastoris, Hansenula polymorpha, Yarrowia lipolytica, Arxula adeninivorans and Schizosaccharomyces pombe in producing biopharmaceuticals were evaluated in comparison to other expression systems.
Proceedings from BioTech 2008 are available as a PDF download. Photos from the meeting are also available at view BioTech 2008 photos.
