Licensing the Pichia Yeast Protein Expression System

Licensing

Research Corporation Technologies has made the licensing process rapid and simple, by creating three different nonexclusive licenses, one of which should fit into your future business plans.

The major differences among these licenses, termed Class A, Class B and Class C, are in the financial terms. Proteins excluded from production in Pichia (due to previous licensing commitments), bulk product terms and legal aspects are identical among all three license classes.

All classes of license agreements have similar legal language but different financial arrangements. The following table summarizes the medical products financial terms for the four classes of licenses:

Class A Class B Class C Research Only (Valid for 5 years)
License Issue Fee $75,000 $40,000 $20,000 $50,000
Annual Minimum Royalty $30,000 $20,000 $10,000 NA
Royalty Rate (initial two products) 3% 4% 5% NA
Royalty Rate 3% 3% 3% NA

Specific financial terms for bulk product, nonmedical products and products made, used or sold in nonpatent countries are addressed fully in our license agreements. The license issue fee is due upon signing of the license agreement and nonrefundable. The annual minimum royalty fee is prepaid January 30 of each year and is fully creditable toward royalties owed during that calendar year.

The industry recognizes the importance of the Pichia system in that more than 120 licenses to the system have been granted. We would be happy to work with you to demonstrate the capabilities of the Pichia system and provide as much information for you to make an informed decision on licensing.

RCT and its development partner, Invitrogen Corporation, will be adding new expression vectors, host strains and improved methodologies over the next few years to make the Pichia system more efficient and flexible. Under any of these licenses, you may receive improvements to the Pichia system at no additional cost, as long as your license is in effect.

Also, Invitrogen provides up-to-date technical service for all licensees and works with your scientists to solve problems and increase your chances of success.
